The Urteau Canals, once a vital waterway system in the city of Urteau during the Final Empire, fall into disrepair and are filled with ash following the ashfalls that plague the world in the lead-up to the Hero of Ages. In The Well of Ascension, they serve as a grim symbol of the city's decline under the oppressive rule of Lord Cett and later the Citizen, choked with debris and forgotten. By The Hero of Ages, though not prominently featured, they underscore the broader environmental collapse threatening all of Luthadel's sister cities, with no restoration amid the escalating cataclysm.
