Déagol

Minor

There's a sly quickness to him, sharp eyes darting like minnows in a stream, his small frame humming with quiet cunning. You sense he's the sort who finds treasures where others see only mud, his presence as elusive as river mist.

Déagol, a Stoor hobbit, appears only briefly in The Fellowship of the Ring as the unwitting discoverer of the One Ring while fishing in the Gladden Fields, an event that ignites the tragic saga of the Ring's corrupting influence. His immediate murder at the hands of his cousin Sméagol marks the dark origin of Gollum and sets the irreversible chain of events leading to the War of the Ring. Though his role is fleeting and he does not evolve beyond this single, pivotal moment, Déagol's greedy grasp for the Ring echoes as the first mortal victim of its power in Middle-earth's history.

Physical Description

A small, slender hobbit-like man with sharp, darting eyes that miss nothing. Dark curly hair tangled with river weeds clings damply to his head. His face is clever and sly, skin pale from watery haunts, dressed in simple ragged clothes befitting a quiet-footed wanderer. He moves with a secretive, nimble grace, exuding an air of hidden curiosity.

Evolution

The Fellowship of the Ring: Being the First Part of the Lord of the Rings

Déagol, a quiet-footed hobbit-like Stoor, dove into the Gladden Fields and unearthed the One Ring, sparking the tragic chain that birthed Gollum from his cousin Sméagol. Murdered in the moment of discovery, his life became the dark origin of the Ring's hold on Middle-earth. A fleeting figure whose greed-tinged find echoed through the ages.

  • While fishing with his cousin Sméagol in the Gladden Fields, Déagol dives into the river and discovers the One Ring at the river bottom.
  • Overcome by possessiveness, Déagol refuses to share the beautiful gold ring with Sméagol despite it being Sméagol's birthday gift.
  • In a fit of murderous rage, Sméagol strangles Déagol to death and claims the Ring for himself.
  • Déagol's body is hidden, and his death transforms Sméagol into the creature known as Gollum.
