Captured by orcs and separated in The Two Towers, he forges an unlikely alliance with Treebeard, igniting the Ents' march on Isengard and showcasing his growing resourcefulness amid a scarred, defiant maturity. By The Return of the King, Merry evolves into a battle-hardened esquire to King Théoden of Rohan, wielding a blade that strikes down the Witch-king's fell beast, standing tall in Rohan's armor as a magnificent and resilient hero who returns home transformed by war's forge.

Merry Brandybuck is a young hobbit with a sturdy, compact build and a round, good-natured face framed by curly brown hair. He has warm hazel eyes and a ruddy complexion typical of the Shire-folk. Practical and perceptive, he carries himself with a quiet confidence. He wears warm hobbit garments, later supplemented with an elven cloak of shifting grey-green-brown fastened with a green leaf brooch veined with silver, plus a small silver belt with a golden flower clasp. A young hobbit appearing much like a man yet not much more than half a man's height with a vigorous build. His head bears thick brown curling hair left uncovered above a pale face marked by a brown scar across the forehead that he will carry forever. Clad in a travel-stained grey cloak of elven make, he moves with grim defiance, often resting easily against stones with legs crossed and arms behind his head while sending long wisps and rings of thin blue smoke from his pipe after his labours and healing. Merry is a young hobbit who stands three inches taller than typical for his race, with brown curly hair and a large, strong build that makes him appear magnificent and tough in the fibre. He is most often seen wearing the battle gear of Rohan including a grey cloak, stout leather jerkin, small helm and round shield with the white horse device, or later in bright mail under a cloak with white and green attire and splendid finery.
