Bree
Bree is an old crossroads village of stone houses built against the slopes of Bree-hill and defended by a dike, thick hedge, and gates that close at night. The prominent Prancing Pony inn, built long ago with wings dug into the hillside, serves as a warm, smoky hub for a diverse crowd of men, hobbits, and dwarves gathered around a large fire. It stands amid a modest patch of tamed fields and woodland, like an island in the surrounding empty northern lands forty miles east of the Shire.
