The Ered Lithui, known as the Ash Mountains, emerge in *The Two Towers* as the grim, ash-gray northern barrier of Mordor, their broken peaks and barren ridges underscoring the desolate hostility of Sauron's realm. In *The Return of the King*, they solidify as a pivotal geographical feature, visible from the scorched plains of Gorgoroth and enclosing the dark heart of Mordor, framing the epic confrontations that lead to the Dark Lord's downfall. Though static as a location, their unyielding presence evolves from a mere border in Sam's desperate trek to an integral part of the apocalyptic landscape during the Battle of the Black Gate.
