Rammas Echor

fortressfortified wall

The Rammas Echor is a massive stone out-wall built with great labour after Ithilien fell under the shadow of the Enemy. It appears partly ruinous with hurried repairs in progress, stretching over ten leagues from the mountains' feet to enclose the fair fertile townlands of the Pelennor on long slopes and terraces before reaching the Anduin. At its north-eastern extent it stands high and strong on a frowning bank four leagues from the city overlooking river flats, featuring a guarded gate between embattled towers on a walled causeway, while its south-eastern reach lies only a league from the city upon the river's brink.

The Rammas Echor, a vast stone wall encircling the Pelennor Fields of Minas Tirith, stands as Gondor's desperate bulwark erected after the fall of Ithilien to Sauron's shadow, its ancient stones bearing the scars of hurried repairs amid encroaching ruin. In The Return of the King, this formidable barrier—stretching ten leagues from the mountains to the Anduin—proves perilously vulnerable, swiftly breached by the Enemy's relentless orc hordes in the lead-up to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Though it delays the assault momentarily, its fall underscores the fragility of Gondor's defenses, paving the way for the epic clash on the fields within.
