River Anduin
The River Anduin, also called the Great River or Withywindle in its upper reaches, is a dark cool brown waterway that winds lazily through a queer forest valley, heavily bordered, arched, and obstructed by ancient willows with great gnarled roots straining into the stream like dragonets. A warm gentle breeze carries fluttering yellow leaves amid rustling reeds and creaking boughs. In its lower course it runs swift past green lawns and frowning cliffs, curling like a toppling wave over the mighty Rauros falls into a foaming pit with a glimmering rainbow, eventually reaching a vast delta where myriads of sea-birds whirl above a green and silver sea.
The River Anduin, the mighty Great River of Middle-earth, serves as a vital geographical and narrative artery throughout The Lord of the Rings, flowing from its shadowy upper reaches in the Withywindle to the thundering Rauros Falls and vast delta. Though its physical majesty is vividly evoked in The Fellowship of the Ring, the river evolves into a crucible of pivotal Fellowship events, a somber funeral bier for Boromir, and a strategic waterway shadowed by the Enemy's gaze in later volumes. Across the trilogy, Anduin embodies both serene beauty and perilous passage, framing the heroes' odyssey from Rivendell to the fringes of Mordor.
