Athelas

item

Withered green leaves that are dry and fragile. Release a pungent fragrance and healing virtue when crushed in hot water. Used by Aragorn for healing.

Athelas, known as kingsfoil or athelas, emerges in The Fellowship of the Ring as a humble, withered herb whose crushed leaves release a healing fragrance in hot water, employed by Aragorn to mend wounds and counter poisons. By The Return of the King, its true potency unfolds, revealing heart-shaped leaves that, when bruised or steamed, combat the dread Black Breath of the Nazgûl, but only fully activate under the hands of the rightful king. This evolution underscores Aragorn's royal lineage and the herb's ancient ties to Númenor, transforming it from a mere remedy into a symbol of restoration and kingship across the series.
