Black Tower at Pass

The Black Tower at Pass, a tall slender spire of black stone shaped like a horn and crowned with an eerie red-burning light, stands sentinel on the shoulder above the narrow, deep-cloven pass in the mountainous barrier of Rohan. First glimpsed in The Two Towers by the beleaguered company of Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli as they desperately pursue the orcs holding Merry and Pippin, it serves as an ominous landmark amid the Emyn Muil's treacherous heights. Though it appears only briefly in the series, the tower evokes the ancient, watchful malice of Sauron's dominion, unchanging and foreboding across the tale's epic scope.
