Théoden

Major

A tall and straight elderly king of Rohan with long thick white hair falling in great braids beneath a thin golden circlet that bears a single white diamond upon his forehead. His snow-white beard flows across his chest and his piercing blue eyes burn with a bright inner light that speaks of renewed vigor and royal resolve. He carries the proud bearing of a warrior lord of the horse-riders, clad in armor and bearing a golden shield while gripping a long spear as he rides a magnificent horse white as snow.

Théoden, King of Rohan, begins the saga in The Two Towers as a decrepit shadow of his former self, ensnared by the treacherous counselor Gríma Wormtongue, until Gandalf liberates him, restoring his vigor and igniting his warrior spirit to rally against Saruman's forces. In The Return of the King, this renewed monarch rides triumphantly to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, forging bonds with hobbits like Merry and leading the Rohirrim in a desperate stand against the Witch-king, only to meet a heroic end that secures his legacy and elevates Éomer to the throne. Across the books, Théoden evolves from frailty to fearless leadership, embodying the resurgence of Rohan's ancient glory amid the gathering darkness.
