Shadowfax

Major

He thunders past like liquid silver, mane flowing as if woven from the wind itself, his coat agleam with unearthly luster. Chief of the Mearas, his eyes hold a fierce ancient intelligence that brooks no master. Riding the air beside him feels like touching legend—wild, proud, impossibly swift.

Shadowfax, the lordly chief of the Mearas and greatest horse of Rohan, emerges in The Two Towers as a proud, untameable steed summoned by Gandalf to aid Théoden, his silver-grey coat gleaming as he outpaces all foes and turns the tide at Helm's Deep. In The Return of the King, he solidifies his role as the faithful mount of the White Rider, bearing Gandalf at unparalleled speed from Rohan to Minas Tirith, through the harrowing battles at the Black Gate, and into the post-war world. After the One Ring's destruction, Shadowfax vanishes into legend, his epic service embodying the wild spirit of Middle-earth's noblest beasts.

Physical Description

Massive and powerfully built, Shadowfax is a silver-grey stallion whose glistening coat shimmers like polished metal under any light, his flowing mane and tail streaming long and wild. As chief of the Mearas, his proud arched neck and rippling muscular frame convey untamed regal might, with intelligent fierce eyes of deep hue. He moves with smooth, shadow-like swiftness, an aura of ancient nobility and unbreakable wildness radiating from his flawless form. A magnificent great horse with a silver-grey coat gleaming like moonlight on steel, his proud neck held high and strong flanks rippling with power. No harness mars his form, accepting none, steaming with sweat yet unweary. His presence is swift, noble, and commanding, marked by a powerful whinny that shakes the air.
