Bag End

househobbit-smial, round doors/windows, turf-covered

Bag End is a desirable and beautiful hobbit-hole dug into the Hill featuring a round front door, round windows set in turf walls with red and golden flowers trailing and peeping in. The garden has a lawn, long sloping path, hedge and gate. Inside are comfortable interconnected rooms including a hall, west-facing study with hearth, and dining-room, lit by sun or fire but growing dark with shadows at sunset.

Bag End, the iconic hobbit-hole in the Shire's Hobbiton, begins as Bilbo Baggins' luxurious and idyllic home, a symbol of hobbit comfort with its round green door, flower-adorned windows, and cozy interconnected rooms, prominently featured as the starting point of Frodo's epic journey in The Fellowship of the Ring. Absent from The Two Towers, it reemerges in The Return of the King as a site of violation and renewal, ransacked by Saruman's ruffians during the Scouring of the Shire, only to be lovingly restored by Samwise Gamgee, who receives it as a gift from Frodo and transforms it into his own family seat. This evolution mirrors the trilogy's themes of loss, resilience, and homecoming, transitioning from pristine haven to battle-scarred survivor and finally to a legacy of hope.
