Azriel’s father was a local lord whose cruelty marked his son’s childhood. He sent Azriel to a war-camp for training, then confined him in a lightless, windowless cell for eleven years; Azriel’s mother arranged the confinement and permitted only a weekly hour together. The book gives little more of the father’s life, leaving his legacy in the lasting harm of that childhood.
