The Culture

In the vast interstellar civilization known as the Culture, where post-scarcity technology has eliminated material want, a shapeshifting mercenary named Bora Horza Gobuchul becomes entangled in the escalating conflict between the Culture and the religiously expansionist Idiran Empire. Set against the backdrop of a galaxy-spanning war between organic life and machine intelligence, the story follows Horza's desperate mission to infiltrate a forbidden planet and capture a stranded Culture Mind. The central conflict pits the Culture's hedonistic, interventionist society against the Idirans' zealous crusade to subjugate 'inferior' species, with Horza caught between both sides as a biological being who distrusts machine dominance.
