Under the Mountain begins as the subterranean prison-fortress of the ruthless High Queen Amarantha, where she holds the faerie courts in thrall and forces Feyre to endure three lethal trials. After its liberation at the climax of the first book, the mountain’s labyrinthine halls become a haunting reminder of past atrocities and a strategic stronghold that later courts and rebels exploit. Over the subsequent volumes the site evolves from a symbol of oppression into a contested battleground whose tunnels and wards are repeatedly repurposed for both clandestine meetings and open warfare.
