Chapters

  1. 1Chapter I. Down the Rabbit-Hole

Alice, bored by the riverbank, chases a talking White Rabbit down a deep well into a strange hall lined with locked doors. After drinking from a bottle labeled "DRINK ME," she shrinks to ten inches tall, but forgets the golden key needed to enter the beautiful garden beyond the tiny door. Frustrated and tearful, she eats a cake marked "EAT ME" to try to change her size again.

  2. 2Chapter II. The Pool of Tears

Alice grows enormously tall, then shrinks rapidly after fanning herself with the White Rabbit's fan, leaving her stranded outside the locked garden door. She cries a pool of tears, then swims in it alongside the White Rabbit, a Mouse, and other creatures after accidentally offending the Mouse by mentioning her cat Dinah. The chapter captures Alice's emotional volatility—oscillating between wonder, frustration, loneliness, and desperate attempts to understand her changing identity—as she navigates the increasingly absurd logic of Wonderland.

  3. 3Chapter III. A Caucus-Race and a Long Tale

After the chaotic swim, Alice and the bedraggled animals gather on the bank, where the Mouse attempts to dry them with a dry history lesson that quickly devolves into interruptions and confusion. The Dodo proposes a Caucus-race with no rules, resulting in everyone winning and Alice distributing comfits and her thimble as prizes. The gathering dissolves when Alice mentions her cat Dinah, leaving her alone and tearful as the Mouse storms off and the others flee.

  4. 4Chapter IV. The Rabbit Sends in a Little Bill

Alice, still tiny, is mistaken for the White Rabbit's housemaid and sent to fetch his gloves and fan. Inside his house she drinks from an unlabeled bottle and grows so large she fills the room, trapping herself. The Rabbit and his animal helpers try to evict her; she kicks Bill the lizard up the chimney, then eats a pebble-turned-cake to shrink and escapes into the woods, where she encounters a giant puppy and finally meets a smoking Caterpillar atop a mushroom.

  5. 5Chapter V. Advice from a Caterpillar

Alice encounters a languid Caterpillar atop a mushroom who repeatedly challenges her identity and sense of self. Through their circular conversation, Alice struggles to explain her size changes and recites a distorted poem, leading the Caterpillar to reveal that one side of the mushroom makes her grow taller and the other shorter. After the Caterpillar departs, Alice experiments with the mushroom pieces, endures a bizarre encounter with a protective Pigeon who mistakes her for a serpent, and finally regains her normal height before approaching a mysterious little house.

  6. 6Chapter VI. Pig and Pepper

Alice encounters two liveried footmen delivering a croquet invitation from the Queen to the Duchess, then enters a chaotic kitchen filled with smoke and flying cookware where the Duchess sings a violent lullaby while nursing a baby. After the Duchess departs, Alice discovers the baby has transformed into a pig and releases it into the woods. She then meets the grinning Cheshire Cat, who directs her toward the March Hare's house while philosophizing about madness before vanishing piece by piece.

  7. 7Chapter VII. A Mad Tea-Party

Alice joins the Mad Hatter, March Hare, and sleeping Dormouse at their chaotic tea party, where nonsensical conversation and riddles dominate. The Hatter reveals his eternal six o'clock tea-time stems from offending the Queen of Hearts, and the group moves seats when cups are used. Alice grows frustrated with their rudeness and leaves, discovering a tree-door that leads her back to the hall and finally into the beautiful garden.

  8. 8Chapter VIII. The Queen’s Croquet-Ground

Alice encounters three gardeners frantically painting white roses red to avoid the Queen of Hearts' wrath. When the royal procession arrives, Alice boldly stands her ground as the Queen threatens executions, including the gardeners whom Alice hides. The chaotic croquet game with living hedgehogs and flamingos descends into confusion, interrupted by the Cheshire Cat's disembodied grin, which sparks a dispute over beheading that remains unresolved as the Cat vanishes.

  9. 9Chapter IX. The Mock Turtle’s Story

Alice walks with the Duchess, who repeatedly finds morals in everything and makes Alice uncomfortable with her sharp chin and peppery temper. The Queen appears, threatens the Duchess with execution, and takes Alice back to the chaotic croquet game where she orders constant beheadings. The Queen then sends Alice with the Gryphon to meet the Mock Turtle, who begins recounting his melancholy school days in the sea.

  10. 10Chapter X. The Lobster Quadrille

Alice listens as the Mock Turtle and Gryphon describe the Lobster Quadrille, a dance involving lobsters, turtles, and seals that ends with throwing partners out to sea. The creatures perform a demonstration without lobsters, singing songs about whiting, soles, and beautiful soup while Alice recites distorted verses. The chapter ends when they hear a cry about a trial beginning and rush off, leaving Alice running with the Gryphon.

  11. 11Chapter XI. Who Stole the Tarts?

Alice attends the trial of the Knave of Hearts in the court of the King and Queen, where the jurors record their names and the Hatter testifies incoherently about the stolen tarts. Alice begins growing larger during the proceedings, causing discomfort to those around her, while the Queen orders the suppression of guinea-pigs and the removal of the Dormouse. The chapter ends with the White Rabbit calling Alice as the next witness.

  12. 12Chapter XII. Alice’s evidence

Alice's size grows uncontrollably during the trial, causing chaos as she upsets the jury-box and scatters the jurors. The King attempts to enforce Rule Forty-two to remove her from court, but Alice defies the authority. When the Queen demands sentence before verdict, Alice rejects the entire proceedings as absurd, declares the court a pack of cards, and awakens from her dream on the riverbank with her sister.
