Andrey Lopakhin, known by the nickname Khapa, was a former investigator with the Moscow Criminal Investigation Department and the previous occupant of Artem’s desk in the homicide unit. He was diligent, though not a genius, a reputation that marks him as a steady working professional rather than a legendary detective. The text offers no further account of his life.
