He has the practiced air of a man who knows when to laugh and where to stand. In the corner, his accommodating smile makes him seem less a voice of his own than an echo waiting for its cue.

B. Pitomnik is a newspaper correspondent who writes on scientific subjects, appearing among the company gathered in a director’s office. He keeps to the corner and laughs along with Vybegallo’s bombast, embodying the press’s pliant, accommodating side. The text offers no further personal history or development.
Description
The text identifies Pitomnik as a male correspondent but does not describe his age, physique, coloring, hair, eyes, or clothes. His clearest visual impression is of a man standing in a corner of the director’s office, wearing an ingratiating, almost clownish smile as he laughs along. His deferential posture makes him seem eager not to draw attention to himself.
