- First seen · Book 1 · Ch. 47
At first, Чужой is almost disarmingly small: a bright orange puff of fur punctuated by beadlike eyes on a screen. There is something both charming and profoundly alien about this compact presence, as if an entirely different way of sensing the world is peering back.

Чужой first appears as a tiny orange-furred visitor on a video screen, its beadlike eyes offering an oddly endearing face to an utterly unfamiliar form of life. In a later appearance, the creature is described more fully as a barrel-bodied, horizontally symmetrical land octopus, with twelve tentacles and a ring of sensory organs. Its blue ceremonial coloring, green spots, glittering breathing openings, and potent spicy-plant scent make its presence impossible to mistake.
Description
Чужой is a small, barrel-shaped, horizontally symmetrical alien with a dense coat of vivid orange fur and tiny beadlike eyes. A ring of visual and olfactory receptors encircles its body, while six tentacles reach upward and six downward. In its ceremonial appearance, its body is painted blue with green spots and glitter around the breathing openings; it is also associated with a strong, spicy, plantlike aroma. Its compact form has the uncanny familiarity of an octopus crossed with a furred creature.
