With plump cheeks and guileless eyes, she has the uncanny charm of a little netsuke come to life. Beneath an oversized jacket and a scarf too large for her, she offers her wares with cold hands and an expression that seems both utterly trusting and strangely out of time.

The ten-year-old girl first appears as a shivering street vendor, wrapped in clothes far too large for her and selling Chinese lighters from a shoebox lid. Beneath that humble appearance is a traveler through time, moving between identities and places with the composure of someone carrying an impossible secret. Her later appearance in traditional Japanese dress—the dark yellow garment and scarlet silk mantle—makes the small, netsuke-like figure seem at once more vivid and more mysterious. She remains a child whose innocent face disguises a life beyond the ordinary flow of years.
Description
She is a small, roughly ten-year-old girl with plump cheeks and innocent, childlike eyes; her features are strikingly like those of a traditional netsuke figurine. In her most common street appearance, an oversized, dirty nylon jacket hangs loosely over her small frame, with a broad adult scarf wound around her and a knitted wool cap over hair whose color is not specified. Her hands are often bluish with cold, and her slight, doll-like presence makes her seem both vulnerable and oddly composed. In another look she wears a dark yellow traditional Japanese dress with a scarlet silk mantle and kazami.
