Максим

Maksim feels capable and self-reliant, a trained pilot whose athletic ease is unmistakable even when he is far from the comfort of ordinary clothes. His bare, burr-pricked feet and roughening beard lend him an unexpectedly human, unvarnished charm.

Maksim is a 30-year-old astrophysicist and trained pilot of the Free Search Group, accustomed to spacesuits and the routines of spaceflight. In an unfamiliar landscape he is described barefoot and nearly unclothed, while elsewhere he moves between a suit outdoors and casual clothes inside a greenhouse dome. Weeks of solitude leave him with an unkempt beard, which he eventually shaves. The text presents him as resilient and adaptable, though it gives no fuller account of his relationships or eventual fate.
Description
Maksim is a young-looking, athletic man, specified as 30 years old, with a strong, trained build. His complexion, hair color, eye color, and facial features are not described; in one scene he has grown an unkempt beard after weeks alone, then shaves it. His clothing varies between a spacesuit outdoors, casual clothes inside a greenhouse dome, and, in a separate description, only underwear; he is also shown barefoot, his feet pricked by burrs. He has the practical, self-possessed presence of an experienced pilot.
