Pavel Arsenov has the settled air of a man used to comfort: prosperous, substantial, and more at home with a glass in hand than with the prospect of denying himself. Beneath that ease is the curious mix of a trained biologist and a practiced entrepreneur.

A well-off Russian biologist and entrepreneur, Arsenov is introduced as a middle-aged graduate of Moscow State University’s biology faculty, vacationing in Chile. He tries to draw in and tuck away his emerging belly, but his appetite for wine and vodka makes the gesture feel more hopeful than convincing. Known at different moments as Arsenov, Danilych, and Mинин, he carries himself with the solidity of a man accustomed to comfort and consequence.
Description
Arsenov is a middle-aged man of solid, somewhat heavy build, with a belly beginning to show. His hair, eyes, complexion, height, and precise facial features are not specified. He is presented as an affluent Russian tourist, so his clothing reads as comfortable and presentable rather than rugged or formal. His most distinctive visual impression is a respectable, substantial figure with a noticeable softness around the middle.
