Age has not made him quiet: he fills his office with smoke, conversation, and an energy that seems to outrun his years. There is something volatile beneath the sociable professor’s vigor, a sense that even his smallest reactions may become emphatic.

Pyotr Valentinovich Aglasov is an over-seventy professor and head of the gas-dynamics faculty, still broad-shouldered, energetic, and intensely sociable. A heavy smoker, he holds court in an air-conditioned office thick with cigarette smoke. When confronted, his bluster gives way to hysteria and then to the trembling spite of an old man obsessively underlining letters on a sheet of paper.
Description
Aglasov is over seventy, sturdy and broad-shouldered, with an energy that seems striking against his age. He smokes heavily, and his office is described as smoke-filled and air-conditioned. The text does not establish his hair, eye color, clothing, or precise facial features. His presence is forceful and expressive, prone to broad gestures before settling into a visibly trembling, irritable stillness.
