A pale fringe keeps slipping into his eyes, softening a face marked by dirt and a youth that sits uneasily beside his sharp, guarded manner. Wrapped in bright, oversized layers, he gives the impression of someone learning to make himself formidable before the world can decide what he is.

Rockwell first appears as a dirt-smeared boy who has survived a train wreck, his neat fair fringe at odds with the harshness around him. As he moves through a frozen, broken world, warm clothes too large for him and a notched knife accompany a hardening, increasingly cynical manner. He grows into the figure called Drago, one of the few childhood companions who did not mock Eldhouse for being mute, and witnesses Eldhouse's death by the fire.
Description
Rockwell is a slim, adolescent boy with a youthful face often smudged with dirt and a tidy, light-colored fringe that falls toward his eyes. His warm, brightly varied clothes hang oversized on his frame, giving him a swallowed-up, makeshift look. A shaved patch at the back of his head leaves a small lock of hair, and he carries a notched knife. His watchful expression can turn abruptly into a careless, taunting ease.
