At first glance, Rostislav seems like a young student one might pass on a Moscow street, though his hooked nose gives his face an unusual, memorable angle. There is a faint sense that the ordinary surface is being held in place by effort, and that something stranger waits just beneath it.

Rostislav Petrov first appears as a young student, his human face marked by a hooked nose shaped through surgery. Beneath that appearance is a Gecko, a humanoid lizard from the thirty-second century; when the disguise falls away, scales, sharp teeth, and a tail reveal his true nature, while his voice whistles. His brief story turns on the startling collision between an everyday human guise and an unmistakably inhuman identity.
Description
In his human appearance, Rostislav is a young man with the look of a Moscow student and a distinctively hooked nose. The text supplies no clear details about his height, build, complexion, hair, eyes, or habitual clothes, so these should not be fixed without further evidence. His alternate Gecko form is humanoid and reptilian, with visible scales, sharp teeth, a tail, and a whistling voice. A Makarov pistol is associated with him.
