Семен Иванович, affectionately called Семка, begins as an elderly inventor whose trembling hands seem to mark the limits of age. His time-travel excursion briefly restores a younger agility, giving him a startling taste of movement beyond those limits. The story finally leaves him sleeping peacefully in a fashionable bed of dark, unpolished wood, a calm image after his extraordinary passage through time.
