Susanna seems to have been battered by both weather and fear: a soaked, trembling girl with a face that is less pretty than impossible to forget. There is something uncanny in her guarded stillness, as if she is listening for meanings other people cannot hear.

When Mike and Drago encounter Susanna, she is a frightened, soaked girl in a patched dress, her feet injured by predatory river fish and mismatched in a single heavy boot. She clings close to Mike, then later waves from the window of a house as they leave. On their onward journey, they remember her as a strange local witch whose prediction had shadowed their path.
Description
Susanna is a very thin adolescent with a plain, expressive face, often wet and tear-streaked; her hair color and eye color are not specified. Her mended dress is damp and clings to her slight frame. Fish bites mark her legs and feet, and her most distinctive detail is the mismatched footwear: one heavy military boot, the other foot bare. She has a vulnerable, wary presence, as though ready to retreat at the slightest movement.
