He seems less like a passerby than something the road has left behind: silent, sun-worn, and impossible to hurry. Beneath the brim of his old hat, his glassy gaze offers no clue what he sees—or whether he is looking at you at all.

An ancient Mapuche man encountered beside a dusty road, he sits among the small souvenirs he sells with an almost total stillness. His silence and fixed gaze make him feel like a witness to a world moving past him, though the story offers no further account of his life.
Description
He is very old and frail, with a motionless face deeply scored by wrinkles and eyes with a glassy, distant look. An old straw hat shades his features, and a dirty, worn poncho hangs around him. He is barefoot, his quiet, immobile presence blending into the dust of the roadside.
