He is difficult to look at steadily: a presence that seems to gather itself out of the landscape, then borrow a familiar face. Even in his plain, worn clothes, he carries the unsettling certainty of someone who knows every way out—and every way back.

The Master of Roads first manifests as a spinning sand vortex and a tree-like old man, cycling through illusions before taking the narrator’s exact likeness. Wearing the narrator’s practical clothes and carrying a silvered blade, he makes the uncanny feel almost ordinary. As the encounter reaches its end, the gold and gems on his cloak crumble away and his face hardens into a concrete mask, exposing the strange, impersonal force beneath the borrowed appearance.
Description
His most recognizable guise is a youngish, clean-shaven man with disheveled hair, dressed in worn blue jeans and a mottled brownish-green camouflage jacket. A backpack and silvered blade complete his travel-worn silhouette, while a cloak that may glitter with gold and gems lends him an incongruous, otherworldly air. His face can become rigid and masklike, giving his otherwise familiar appearance a stark, uncanny edge. His presence seems to shift between human likeness and something elemental.
