Shai-Hulud is the Fremen name for the enormous sandworms of Arrakis, creatures so vast that the greatest are said to exceed four hundred meters in length. They answer the pulse of thumpers, rise from the deep desert in rushing waves of sand, and are revered by the Fremen as sacred makers. Fremen sandriders learn to mount and steer them, turning a force of the desert into a means of travel. Shai-Hulud remains at once a living creature, a natural power, and a deity woven into Fremen life.

Description

Shai-Hulud is a gigantic sandworm, its immense length hidden beneath the dunes and said to exceed four hundred meters. Its passage raises a moving mound of sand, leaving a flattened track and a rushing roar like metal crunching and shattering. When its head crests the desert, sand rolls outward in waves around the enormous form. The creature’s scale makes the landscape seem small, while its ancient, elemental presence gives it the air of both natural force and sacred being.
