The Abyss first appears in Book 3 as a vast, multi-layered chasm beneath the Iron Tangle, functioning as both a hidden transit network and a deadly ecosystem. Over subsequent books it evolves from a mere shortcut into a strategic battleground where crawlers exploit its verticality, bioluminescent hazards, and native factions. By later entries the Abyss becomes a symbol of the dungeon’s hidden depths—its forgotten lore, ancient inhabitants, and the crawlers’ growing willingness to descend into literal and moral darkness to survive.
