Throughout the series it evolves from a solitary, ominous guardian into a recurring environmental hazard whose presence signals escalating floor-wide threats and the Crawlers’ growing ability to exploit or neutralize such constructs. Its mechanical physiology—antlers that function as both weapons and antennae—becomes a focal point for Carl’s trap-building ingenuity, transforming the stag from an inscrutable monster into a puzzle piece the protagonists learn to dismantle or repurpose.
