Nightmare Express first appears in Book 3 as a jet-black steam locomotive marked '666' that runs the 83-283-436 loop, hauling 14 open-top monster pens and a rear caboose. Over the course of the series it becomes more than a mere train: its route is later revealed to be a covert supply artery for the Syndicate, and its caboose conceals a hidden portal that allows crawlers to bypass entire floors. By the later books the locomotive itself is upgraded with AI-controlled turrets and a self-repairing hull, turning it into a mobile fortress that Carl and Princess Donut commandeer during the Faction Wars arc.
