Unwashed Effigy first appears as a mysterious, grime-caked statue in the lower dungeon levels, later revealed to be a dormant guardian construct whose purpose is tied to the Crawl’s hidden endgame. Across subsequent floors, the effigy awakens in stages—first animating to repel invaders, then communicating through carved runes, and finally revealing itself as a sentient archive of every crawler who has ever died. By Book 8, it has become both an ally and a warning, guiding Carl’s party while hinting that its ultimate function may decide the fate of the entire dungeon.
