Softstep, the tall chestnut mare, enters as an elegant mount for key journeys, enduring fights that leave her neck bloodied, mouth bruised, and scratched. She carries Fitz through battles and escapes in Assassin's Apprentice and beyond, her resilience mirroring his own. In the end, she remains a steadfast companion, bloodied but unbowed.
