The merpeople live in a village beneath the lake and gather around the events of the second task. Their leader, Murcus, speaks with Dumbledore and tells the judges what happened below the surface. With their jeering, singing, and imposing presence, they turn the underwater setting into a world with its own people and authority.

Description

The merpeople have grayish skin, long, wild dark-green hair, yellow eyes, and broken teeth. Their powerful silver fish tails propel them through the water, and many wear thick ropes of pebbles around their necks; some are notably tall, with long green beards and chokers of shark fangs. They carry spears and have a rough, animated presence, often laughing, jeering, or singing in screechy voices.
