Onslow begins as Clive Standish’s steadfast rune-tortoise familiar, a living mount whose shell flashes lightning and fires water bullets. After his body is destroyed at the Battle of Yaresh, he is resummoned and reveals the true scale of his magic: his rune-etched shell can expand into a wind-barrier vehicle, a cottage-sized fortress, or shrink to a compact tattoo on Clive’s abdomen. Across later books he gains humanoid form and ritual-casting abilities, evolving from simple companion to versatile battlefield asset while retaining his patient, dependable nature.

Description

Onslow is a tortoise with a shell covered in runes, the markings making its broad back its most distinctive feature. It carries itself low and sturdy, with its head often jutting forward in an alert, doglike pose. Its shell can flash with lightning, though its ordinary coloring and other physical details are not specified. Its manner feels patient and companionable. Onslow is a tortoise familiar with a compact, rounded body and large, expressive eyes. His face can look especially mournful when caked in mud, lending his small form a comically bedraggled air. His most distinctive feature is a shell marked with magical runes; in its expanded form, it becomes an enormous protective structure surrounded by wind barriers. In ordinary form, he appears steady and gentle, a small creature carrying an unmistakable aura of magic. Onslow’s best-known form is a tortoise about the size of a small car, with a broad shell and a thick neck described as nearly as wide as a pony. Runes mark his back, the most distinctive detail of his appearance, and his overall coloring is not specified. He can also take a little humanoid form, where his tortoise features and tiny hands give him a compact, gentle look. His bearing is placid and unhurried, whether walking across grass or floating through the air.
