The Sea of Quus is first introduced in Book 1 as a vast, enigmatic body of water that borders the Hierarchy’s southern frontier, its true nature and strategic importance only hinted at through the eyes of the Will of the Many’s protagonists. Across the series it evolves from a distant, almost mythic backdrop into a contested geopolitical and metaphysical frontier, its tides and currents literally reshaping the balance of power between the Hierarchy and its rivals. By later volumes the Sea becomes both a literal battleground and a symbolic threshold between the known world and the unknown, its shifting shores mirroring the characters’ own transformations.
