Black Mule first appears in Deadhouse Gates as Iskaral Pust’s ornately saddled ebon mount, a seemingly ordinary beast of burden that nonetheless carries the High Priest of Shadow across the Seven Cities. Throughout the series the mule remains a silent, enigmatic companion whose endurance and uncanny timing hint at deeper, possibly supernatural, significance. Its continued presence alongside Pust underscores the priest’s eccentricities while subtly reinforcing the theme that even the most mundane creatures in the Malazan world may serve inscrutable, god-touched purposes.
