Leadwood Marsh first appears in Deadhouse Gates as a brief, oppressive stretch of stagnant wetland that the refugee columns must cross during their desperate flight across Seven Cities. Its leadwood trees and treacherous footing serve as a physical manifestation of the land’s exhaustion and the refugees’ suffering.
