The Shadow Realm, the warren of Meanas known also as Kurald Emurlahn's shattered remnant, is first glimpsed in Gardens of the Moon as the domain of the upstart ascendants Shadowthrone and Cotillion, whose fearsome Hounds of Shadow stalk both its grey wastes and the mortal world. In Deadhouse Gates the realm takes on a more tangible and eerie character: a formless grey expanse of musty high halls, polished floors and swallowing mist, traversed by mortals and riddled with the fragments of an older, broken power. Across the two books it shifts from a backdrop of divine menace to a haunting, labyrinthine place whose ambiguous nature mirrors the scheming of its masters.
