The Dead Mare Sacrifice first appears in Deadhouse Gates as a grim battlefield rite in which a slain Wickan mare’s life force is channeled by warlocks to empower charging cavalry. Across the series the ritual evolves from a localized, desperate expedient into a recurring symbol of the Wickan people’s willingness to barter death for victory, resurfacing whenever their horsemen ride to war. By later volumes the act is remembered as both a tactical innovation and a haunting reminder of the moral cost paid by the Wickan clans in service to the Malazan Empire.
