The Season of Rot first manifests in Deadhouse Gates as a supernatural plague that blankets the Seven Cities during the Whirlwind uprising, its black glittering flies and bloated corpses serving as both omen and weapon of the rebellion. Across the series, this pestilence evolves from a localized environmental curse into a recurring motif of imperial decay and divine retribution, its acrid smoke and swarming insects reappearing whenever the gods or ascendants seek to punish mortal ambition. By later volumes, the Season becomes a symbol of cyclical history—each new outbreak echoing the last, reminding both characters and readers that empires, like flesh, are doomed to fester and fall.
