Elder Deck Carvings first appear in Deadhouse Gates as enigmatic, half-forgotten glyphs etched into the walls of the Azath House, their meanings lost to time. Across the series they evolve from mere decorative motifs into living conduits of ancient power, their lines shifting and rewriting themselves in response to the Azath’s will. By later books they are revealed to be the physical manifestation of the Deck of Dragons’ oldest, pre-Ascendant pantheon, capable of binding gods and mortals alike.
