The Marine-issue crossbow first appears in Deadhouse Gates as a heavy, clawfoot-cocked weapon carried by Kalam and Minala, marking it as standard Malazan Marine kit and setting it apart from the lighter Claw compact bow. Across the series it becomes a recurring emblem of disciplined, line-breaking firepower—its weight and slow reload traded for armor-piercing bolts that can drop Soletaken, T’lan Imass, or Forkrul Assail when ordinary arrows fail. By later volumes the same design is referenced in sieges from Y’Ghatan to Kolanse, its distinctive cocking claw now synonymous with Marine tenacity and the Empire’s willingness to equip rank-and-file soldiers with weapons once reserved for specialists.
