- First seen · Book 7 · Ch. 30
Professor Tober reaches the reader through the traces of a thoughtful, particular mind: a letter and the care behind an unusually accurate toy. There is something quietly intriguing about a person whose presence is felt through what he makes and writes, rather than through an entrance.

Professor Olin Tober is known in the novel chiefly through a letter to the editor and as the creator of accurate Soonie Pup toys. These small traces suggest a careful observer with an interest in getting details right, but the book gives him no substantial personal arc or direct role in the central events.
