Terris begins as a conquered northern dominance whose people endure cultural suppression under the Final Empire, yet it remains the spiritual and genetic cradle of the Terris race. Across the series, the region transforms from a fractured land of hidden Keepers and refugee enclaves into a politically assertive power whose stewardship of ancient knowledge proves decisive in reshaping the post-Catacendre world. By the later books, Terris evolves from a symbol of quiet resistance into an active architect of the new societal order, its people balancing the preservation of their heritage with the demands of a radically changed Scadrial.
