The Well of Ascension begins as a mysterious, sealed subterranean reservoir of raw power in the second book, its true nature and purpose shrouded in myth and prophecy. By the third book, it is revealed as the final resting place of Preservation’s essence and the site where the Lord Ruler originally imprisoned Ruin, transforming the Well from a mere source of power into the linchpin of the world’s fate. Its activation and subsequent misuse by Vin mark the turning point that frees Ruin, setting the stage for the cataclysmic events of the third book.
