Preservation is the ancient Shard whose power is first hinted at through the enigmatic mist spirit in The Hero of Ages. Initially perceived as a cryptic guide, it is gradually revealed as the cosmic force opposing Ruin, subtly steering Vin and Sazed toward the truth of the world's impending doom. Its interventions, though limited by its self-imposed restrictions, prove pivotal in the final struggle to preserve existence against total annihilation. Over the course of the series, Preservation transitions from a mysterious background presence to a central figure in the metaphysical battle for the fate of Scadrial.
