Mistwraiths begin as grotesque scavengers in the Final Empire, digesting corpses and stealing their skeletons to mimic human forms. Over the course of the series they evolve from mere opportunistic feeders into increasingly sophisticated, mist-linked predators whose abilities and appearances shift dramatically with each new era. By the time of The Lost Metal, they have become terrifying, tentacled silhouettes that emerge from ocean depths and actively steal the faces of known individuals, suggesting a progression from passive corpse-thieves to active, shape-stealing hunters.
